Computer Phobic? - Learning how to use a computer is not hard to do. Here are some ways to unlock the mysteries of your computer.
- Here is a great site that covers the basics in easy to understand terms: http://www.jegsworks.com/Lessons/index.html
- Microsoft Office On-Line Training: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/training/default.aspx
- Microsoft has a Help and Support Center built into their Windows software. To access it click on Start and then click on the blue question mark. If you can't find what you are looking for on the Help and Support page, type in the topic that you need help on in the Search field. For example, to learn how to use a mouse, type Mouse in the Search field and you will be taken to the chapter on how to use a mouse.
- Almost all of the Windows based programs have a built in help feature that will answer most questions.
Personal Computer Maintenance - To keep your computer running at optimum speed you need to perform regular maintenance. Some things to do to improve performance are:
- Run a disk defrag regularly. Over time as you add and remove files, your hard drive works harder loading your program and data files. This is because your files may be located in different parts of your hard drive. They will load, but because the PC is searching the hard drive to find the complete file it takes longer to load. Running a defrag ensures that your files are in a organized on your hard drive so they can be retrieved more efficiently. A more technical explanation can be found at http://computer.howstuffworks.com/question548.htm. See your Windows help for instructions on how to run the Disk Defragmenter on your pc.
- Clear out temporary internet files
- Use and run a Spyware utility regularly
- Keep an inventory of your programs. Many times the kids will download things from the internet that only clog up your system. Keep only the programs your use and are familiar with.
- Don't know what a file is? http://filext.com/index.php
Virus Information - Is your computer doing wacky things? Do you think you have a virus? Here are some links to companies that I have used for virus protection and to learn about virus characteristics and definitions:
